Life Lessons From The Game of Chess
MORE ON NIHOUR
Nihour, 23, has been a valued member of the EYC community for five years, having studied English and computer skills at the intermediate level. Though no longer an active student, Nihour remains deeply involved with EYC as the team leader of the Board Game program, where he teaches and plays chess with students every Sunday.
Nihour’s diverse interests span science, art, music, psychology, and philosophy. He dreams of becoming a creator, whether as a writer, composer, or director. For Nihour, EYC represents a pivotal part of his journey toward achieving these aspirations.
Nihour’s father is a construction worker, while his mother, a retired army officer, is now a homemaker. He has two sisters and two brothers—one of whom has passed away. One sister runs a papaya salad stall, while the other works as a DJ at a local club.
Nihour describes EYC as a second home, where he has acquired academic knowledge, formed lasting friendships, and discovered new opportunities. He values how EYC has connected him with various organizations and provided learning experiences that extend beyond traditional textbooks. These experiences have enabled him to develop essential skills for his future. With the support of EYC, Nihour continues to enhance his skills and confidence as he pursues his dream of becoming a creator.

MICROGRANTS PROGRAM
The EYC Microgrant Project, launched in early 2024, offers students the chance to propose small-scale initiatives with budgets of up to $500. In their proposals, students must clearly articulate their project goals, objectives, planning strategies, budget, organizational structure, and team members.
After reviewing the submissions, EYC selects a handful of projects for funding, enabling students to turn their ideas into reality. This year, two standout proposals received funding: a chess tournament organized by Nihour and a badminton program led by Nivath.
The microgrant initiative provides financial support and encourages creativity and leadership among students. Through this program, EYC seeks to cultivate a vibrant environment for student engagement and skill development.
